Established to raise funds and distribute charitable grants to local non-profit organisations, the Foundation is funded by a percentage of Community CPS’ net profit after tax, as well as by contributions from staff, suppliers, members and the business and wider communities.
Funds will be distributed on an ongoing basis to areas of need, such as education, economic development, health and safety, financial literacy, environmental conservation and sustainability.
ANU Bicycle Co-op
The Community CPS Foundation is proud to have recently donated a grant for $7,558 to the LEAD ANU Bicycle Co-operative to fund their innovative program for the next twelve months.
The ANU Bicycle Co-op is a joint community initiative by LEAD Development, The Environment Centre, ANUgreen, and ANU students. The ANU Bicycle Co-op provides a place where Canberra’s community can develop and encourage environmentally friendly solutions.
People with a disability volunteer at the workshop and learn social skills, mechanical skills, recycling and environmental issues. The ANU Bicycle Co-op also decreases Canberra’s ecological footprint by encouraging reuse and recycling of bicycles and parts, and also by encouraging environmentally sustainable transport strategies such as cycling.
Welcoming the grant, Jeff Thompson, Community Development Manager for the Bicycle Co-op, said it would enable the Co-op to be well stocked for the new University year in February.
“The bike co-op has rebuilt more than 400 bikes since we began as a student group fixing bicycles in their garages just over twelve months ago,“Mr Thompson said. “And we now have over 350 members with 30 volunteers every week coming down to the workshop to rebuild and recycle bikes. “We’re reducing waste that goes to landfill, promoting cycling as a green option for students, and providing a valued volunteering role for people who have a disability.”
The Community CPS Foundation grant will also assist with bicycle safety promotions and learn to ride workshops conducted by the Co-op.
The Community CPS Australia Foundation cheque was presented to the ANU Bicycle Co-op December.
The Foundation provides Community CPS with the opportunity to raise and distribute funds directly to the communities in which we operate, and enables us to improve the lives of everyday Australians.
We also encourage our members to support our Foundation by making a tax deductible donation at any of our Community CPS Personal Financial Centres. Contributions made via cheque or electronic funds transfer will also be accepted.
"Food for Life"
On the 13th May, Community CPS staff from our Environmental Management System Committee were delighted to present Dr Robin Tennant-Wood with a cheque for $10,000 to fund the Canberra Environment & Sustainability Resource Centre's "Food for Life" project.
Background
The Environmental & Sustainability Resource Centre has been in operation since 1974, when it began under the name of ACT Environment Centre. It acts as an umbrella body for groups with a common interest in environment and sustainability. The organisation’s aim is to support the community of Canberra and the South East region in the advancement of the principles of sustainability (environmental, social and economic) through knowledge, education, information and practical applications.Food for Life project
Food for Life: growing and eating local produce for the health of the planet and the health of the community.
This project aims to promote the financial, environmental and health benefits of growing food in whatever space is available within the local community. This will not only have direct benefits to families and the community, but also mitigates against catastrophic failure of food crops due to extreme climatic events.
The Resource Centre aims to demonstrate the volume of fresh food that can be grown in minim al space with minimal inputs. To achieve this, they will construct a free-standing model of a balcony garden that can be displayed at public events. Displays will be done in conjunction with public education, promotional material and information workshops and activities.
